Constipation is commonly defined as less than three bowel movements per week. For me, I see an issue if you're not having at least one BM daily. If that's the case for you, then there's an underlying cause that needs to be addressed.
And there are a range of indicator's and symptoms to consider, including:

• Form: hard stools (Bristol Stool Chart Type 1 & 2 - see next page)
• Frequency: <1 bowel motion a day
• Bloating: abdominal bloating & gas
• Pain: abdominal pain or discomfort associated with defecation
• Sensation: incomplete evacuation or feelings of obstruction
• Straining: difficult to pass stools
• Laxatives: reliance on laxatives
